Cut-out Animation

How cut-out animation work?

Cut-out animation is the same technique for doing stop-motion animation, cut-out animation is using cutout shapes, characters, props and backgrounds from colour paper, white paper with drawing on it or materials that are arranged on a flat surface and manually moved and repositioned to produce the animation.

South Park created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone
For the cut-out animation in South Park they used construction paper (sugar paper) witch is more tougher then normal paper. They used traditional stop motion cutout animation techniques in the original animated shorts and in the pilot episodes but in the later episodes they've been produced by computer animation.

Tom and Jerry was a largely TV Show that was watch using cel animation from 1940 - 1958

Cel animation (cellulose plastic animation) is one of the animation techniques that started in the 1920s, cellulose is a thin pace of plastic. Cell animation is made by using a sheet of transparent cellulose, which the animators used to draw on. Once they draw the cartoons and painted them, they would lay the cells on top of each other to build different backgrounds or characters.

In the 1920s to make a 10 minute animation it would take up to 6 months with a small group between 6 - 12. The small group would all have individual role to make the animation, when the lead artist had do the drawings it would be passed down to an other artist who would paint and fill in the line more. Some else would do the background, once they've do that the actor would do the voice over and would include background music.
